When I first started my Son-Rise® programme for my son (Rohan). I had a lot of people come on to my team and go all for their own reasons, e.g. one wanted a career in teaching another had health problems and a few were just not suitable for the programme.
So to start with I made up this must mean something about me, my ability to train, manage and retain a team. I must be a bad manager and trainer if I can’t retain these people. This was demoralising and every time it was time to recruit I looked upon it as a burdensome event.
Then 7months in to my programme another one of my team decided he was leaving as he wanted to pursue a career in children’s nursing. Again I felt down thinking I have to start all over again this is so hard. Then I realised I was only a failure by my own measures. If I change my measure then I could interpret things differently, so I redefined my role not to retain people but to be one amazing recruiting and training machine.
I at once realised that the majority of people who had left had become my community, before I had very few people I could rely on to look after the kids now I had many friends who were comfortable with Rohan and his ways. I also was spreading so much more of this in to my community around me and that felt good!…and 3 years on Rohan’s programme is still going strong!
